Legal Services and Data Protection

Our Assignments

The Department of Legal Services and Data Protection is comprised of the Contract Law, Employment Law and Data Protection Law teams as well as the Legislative Office. It supports university entities on all legal questions connected with the university.

Contract Law

We mainly focus on legal questions related to UZH contracts. In particular, these include drafting and reviewing contracts used for the procurement of goods and services, the promotion of research and teaching projects through financial contributions (third-party funds) and cooperations with third parties.

In addition to reviewing individual contracts, we also draft GTCs, sample contracts and other templates. Finally, we provide advice and support when you assert and enforce contractual claims.

Employment Law

We provide advice to the competent organizational units of the university, in particular, the Executive Board of the University, the Professorships Department and the Human Resources Department, when there are questions related to overall employment and labor law.

We are responsible for appeals in employment and labor law and carry out further processes connected with employment law. In addition, we provide support and assistance on legislative proposals related to employment and labor law.

Data Protection

We provide you with advice and support on questions related to data protection law and create templates to ensure effective and appropriate data protection. We also ensure compliance with data protection provisions at UZH.

In particular, the Department of Legal Services and Data Protection assists with the drafting of decrees that are adopted or approved by the Executive Board of the University, the Extended Executive Board of the University or the Board of the University. The Department of Legal Services and Data Protection reviews these decrees to ensure they comply with the law, conform to formal requirements and in terms of their classification, language and clarity. The Department of Legal Services and Data Protection can also be involved in the drafting of other decrees.

It is highly recommended that the Department of Legal Services and Data Protection be involved in the relevant work from the start.

Other Assignments

If the university is the recipient of a bequest, we carry out the legal review, initiate the necessary legal steps and support the preparation of the formal decision-making process by the competent university bodies.

Fundraising

The Department of Data Protection would be pleased to assist you with preparing and reviewing fundraising contracts. Below you will find the corresponding legal bases as well as the related fact sheets and process descriptions.

Intellectual Property (particulary Copyright Law)

We advise UZH employees on questions related to intellectual property law. The focus here is primarily on providing advice on copyright law in the area of research and teaching (research projects, publications, dissertations, preparation of documents for courses, the use of content, the creation of a copyright-protected work as part of the work activities performed at UZH, etc.).

When it comes to the economic implementation of research results – protection and management of intellectual property (patents, copyrights, trademarks, etc.), implementation strategy, search for suitable economic partners, licensing agreements – Unitectra advises UZH researchers and employees.

The Department of Data Protection manages the “University of Zurich” trademark (including the “UZH” acronym and logo) on behalf of the Office of the President.
